The NFL Admits Referees Blew Two Calls This Season

Refs of the National Football League have been most criticized this year due to several missed calls.

Of course, the players slip, make a mistake, and the same goes for coaches and even for referees – they make bad calls sometimes. Still, as far as I can recall, the National Football League does not flat out come out and say that league officials messed up on a call. The twist finally happens on Sunday morning, though. On the NFL Today before the KC-Denver game, referee’s microphone picked two missed calls of the season.

They merely missed two big calls in Thursday night’s Eagles vs. Commanders match. In Philadelphia, the team scored 26 against Washington 18.

Before the Arizona matchup, Walt Anderson, the NFL head of officiating, accepted on NFL Network’s GameDay Morning that two mistakes occurred during the Eagles’ win against the Commanders.

First, Anderson acknowledged the Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean shouldn’t have been flagged for pass interference after he pulled the jersey of Commanders receiver Noah Brown during the opening drive of the third quarter. Anderson acknowledged that, while the pulling of Brown’s jersey could have been ruled defensive holding before the ball was thrown, it wasn’t a sufficiently significant hindrance to Brown. And thus shouldn’t have been called.

Anderson apparently got tipsy on the first sip, because then he admitted to a missed roughing the passer call for a hit on Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

It would probably help if the NFL did this more often; get involved in these games and people would probably support more. I think that NFL fans – and players and coaches, too – would accept mistakes, poor calls, etc. a lot better if the league would just admit responsibility for them.

Referees are not superhuman beings and therefore it becomes absurd for anyone to expect them to get almost everything right every week.

Except it would most likely be better for everyone to try to be more direct from here on out.
