And on Friday, two of the top ranked women fighters, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, fought on Netflix live with the bout being aired in 10 rounds, in the living rooms of what was claimed to be 50 million homes. This made Taylor and Serrano the two most-watched female fighters to have ever entered a boxing ring and many had this fight labelled as a breakout moment for the sport; a sign of it’s health.
And the best female fighter in the world? Well, that is still unknown. But Claressa Shields, 15-0 (3), will not surrender that title any time soon if it is hers to lose at that. She is at the moment the SOAT (Self-Appointed) GWOAT (Greatest Woman of All Time) and in only 15 bouts of her professional career has become a four division world champion claimed victories over Christina Hammer, Savannah Marshall and Hanna Gabriels.
The last title she won was in July, when she knocked out Canadian Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in under two rounds at the light-heavyweight division of 175lbs. We are yet to see whether Shields will maintain the number, or drop back to middleweight or anything in between but the 29-year-old is set all the same to take the season early 2025 at a blink.
“I believe that she’ll fight in January or February,” Shields’ promoter, Dmitriy Salita said to BoxingScene. For instance, the only reason she did not engage in a fight again this year after the July fight was because of the movie. Her movie is the one that will be releasing on December 25th in theatre in the United States and that was quite time consuming. It should be good, though. He is such a lucky guy; she has a great story to tell.”
